The Art and Inspiration of “Sounder”: A 50-Year Journey of Discovery In-Person
Dr. Susan Virginia Mead, Ferrum College Professor Emerita, will share a classic that inspired her life’s work: the 1970 Newbery Award winning novel “Sounder” by William H. Armstrong, illustrated by James Barkley. Dr. Mead will tell the story of Virginian Charles Addison Vaughan Jones, the Black educator who inspired Armstrong to write “Sounder” and its sequel “Sour Land.” She will bring a collection of James Barkley’s original artwork that illustrated “Sounder's” first edition. This Black History Month event is designed for learners and literature lovers of all ages. A reception will be held at 4:30pm and Dr. Mead’s talk will begin at 5:30pm. Registration is required. In case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to Feb. 25.
